Participatory Defense

Urban Peace Movement is proud to serve as a member of the National Participatory Defense Network and a founding member of the Alameda County Participatory Defense Hub. Participatory Defense was developed and created by families of Silicon Valley De-Bug’s Albert Cobarrubias Justice Project. Our allies in the hub include All Of Us Or None, Young Women’s Freedom Center, and CURYJ.

Participatory Defense is a community organizing model for people facing charges, their families, and communities to impact the outcome of cases and transform the landscape of power in the court system. Participatory Defense brings community organizing and advocacy to the forefront of the criminal justice system to combat mass incarceration by supporting individuals and their support network to humanize our loved ones who are facing civil or criminal charges. In partnership with family, friends, and community organizations present a holistic view of people to judges, prosecutors, probation officers, and the public—rather than simply a list of charges—to reduce sentences, pre-trial detention, and over-criminalization of our communities.
