Ending Juvenile ‘Direct File’

UPM has joined a statewide coalition called the California Alliance for Youth and Community Justice, which has been pushing for statewide juvenile sentencing reform (in an effort to begin to reverse some of the impacts of California State Proposition 21, passed in 2000, which led to unprecedented numbers of youth being sentenced as adults). The Alliance has been successful in pushing the juvenile sentencing issues forward and we are pleased to announce that a set of very significant policy changes that impact juvenile sentencing have been included in the Governor’s proposed sentencing reform ballot initiative which is proposed for the November 2016 election.  In particular, the Coalition is moving to limit the ability of juvenile prosecutors to directly file juvenile cases to adult court.
