Saturday April 3 & 4th, 2010, Oakland, CA

Urban Peace Movement is co-sponsoring a powerful 2-day training that brings together people from diverse backgrounds working for justice in the the Bay Area to deepen our analysis of conflict and effective social change. It is fitting that this training takes place on the anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination and was developed by Dr. Bernard LaFayette, a Civil Rights youth leader who was told by Dr. King hours before his death, to “institutionalize and internationalize nonviolence.”

It represents perhaps the most direct lineage to Dr. King’s legacy, bringing to life the principles and strategies used in the Civil Rights Movement that altered the trajectory of this country.

WHERE:

The Interplay Studio – 2273 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA 94612 (the intersection of Telegraph and 23rd St)

WHEN:

Saturday, April 3rd 10am to 6pm and Sunday, April 4 10am to 6pm

WHO:

Co-sponsored by the Peace Development Fund and the Urban Peace Movement, with facilitators Kazu Haga and Arthur Romano. (For more information about Dr. LaFayette, listen here!)

COST:

$150 – $50 suggested donation (Pay what you can, though no one will be turned away)

This training has been used successfully all over the world – in low income urban communities in the US, in the Israeli Palestinian conflict, in prisons, and with guerrilla fighters in Nigeria. Using role plays, group discussions, and interactive activities, we will explore the effectiveness of bringing our full humanity to our work. The weekend will provide a framework for conflict reconciliation and mediation, open doorways to coalition building, and act as a catalyzing force for creating an effective social movement.
